Task 3 - Evaluative Diary

26th November 2012 - Today we filmed our news report. It went well after several attempts and audio was very good. When we decided to edit our best shot we remembered that we could have used the green screen in order to make the shot look more realistic by having a news studio background. This meant that we will have to re-film using the green screen tomorrow.

28th November 2012 - Today we re-filmed the news report shot using the green screen effect behind it. We had a few attempts at this but managed to allow us to have a few options to choose from. Now we can edit the shot and include the news report background and titles in order to progress our filming and to be able to film our others shots which include the news report in the background.

This shows Amelia pulling the green screen so
 it was not creased which would  have distorted
the image

29th November 2012 - In the lesson today the green screen shot was edited. This involved making our own news report background on photo-shop in order to use it in the background. After editing and exporting the shot, the picture below shows how the final news report looks.

2nd December 2012 - On Sunday morning Amelia, Jordan and I went started to film for our flash back sequence. We took many different shots from many different angles, for example close ups which we had originally planned to film, as well as some over the shoulder shots using the 180 degree rule. This allows us to be able to compare different shots to be able to choose the most appropriate and effective ones. One of the factors we didn't consider before we started filming was lighting. It was difficult to film ensuring lighting was appropriate without any shadows distorting facial features. However, we did manage to vary positions in order to get the best shots. Next week we will edit our footage.
In some of our attempted shots the lighting was completely unwanted. Shadows made our footage unclear. The reason the footage was unclear was because the key light is coming from behind, and there is no filler lighting around the image. This means that the shot would be high contrast. This is displayed below;

One of the factors we did not consider before we started filming was the weather. When we were filming it was extremely icy and cold which lead to actors taking a while to focus properly to begin with. Eventually we were able to take a varied range of shots despite the coldness, allowing us to progress and choose the ones we are going to use in our opening sequence. Luckily, the extreme weather did not effect the footage itself, therefore it was a small factor we were able to over come quite easily.
The wind also effected some of the overall success of shots. For example when a close up of Amelia was filmed, the wind caused her hair to blow in her face, distorting facial expression and not allowing full view of her emotions. This was especially inconvenient for our footage as the flashback sequence is supposed to portray happiness which this shot didn't allow. However, after a few attempts we were able to film one that was clear and which the wind did not effect. An example of the problem is shown below;

3rd December 2012 - Unfortunately we were planning to film the rest of our footage today but one of the main actors was unable to make it last minute. This means that our shooting schedule is now behind, but we can make up for this by filming this Thursday when all actors are available.

6th December 2012 - Today we were able to finish filming our opening sequence. It was difficult to film everything with precision as we had many shots to film but only had a limited amount of time as the actor could not stay for very long. However, if shots need to be re-filmed we will meed to allow time for this before editing is complete.
Throughout the whole filming process we needed to keep checking the white balance as some shots had a yellow effect. This was successful when filming as we were able to adjust white balance and we went along.
One of the main elements we struggled with was the focus pull. We used this when filming the news report element on the TV. The depth of field was controlled which eventually led to a successful focus pull shots after a number of different attempts. However the overall success of this shot will be fully determined when we begin editing.
Lighting could have been controlled a bit better, with artificial lighting being included. However, we used the lighting available to us and controlled white balance therefore the lighting was the best it could be. Lighting effects can be editing during editing therefore isn't a concern.
One more difficulty during filming was the equipment. It was found that the tripod that we were using wasn't very reliable. This meant that some of our attempted shots were not straight which had a negative effect on the shot causing them to be at a slight slant. However, we managed to overcome this by holding the top of the tripod so the shots were straight.

13th December 2012 - Today we re filmed some of the shots we felt were not good enough for our opening sequence. I felt this was successful and we were able to sort our the colour and mise en scene in each shot which was unsuccessful the first time around. They will still need to be edited to achieve the thriller lighting effect we hope for.

14th January 2013 - We re-filmed some of the opening sequence shots in response to our audience feedback we gained. These were shots such as the when Alex takes away the mug from the kitchen side. This was fixed by making sure that the mug was actually filled with tea instead of just hot water. This means the mise en scene is now correct in this shot. Another shot we had to re-film was when Alex firstly walks into the living room. This was re-shot because as the camera person walk into the living room, they can be seen in the mirror opposite. This was not picked up in our audience feedback but we noticed it ourselves. To overcome this we took down the mirror so the problem was eliminated.
