Prelim

My script for Prelim task - What's up doc?

EXT. KATES CAR. DAY

KATE nervously taps her fingers on the steering wheel and she drives in to the doctor’s car park. KATE then parks up her car and steps out.

INT. DOCTORS SURGERY. DAY

KATE walks up to the reception desk.

KATE

(shakily speaks)

I have an appointment with Dr. Shells for five past eleven.

RECEPTIONIST

Okay, I have that on record, if you’d like to take a seat he’ll be with you in a few moments.

KATE moves to the waiting area and sits down looking distressed.  DR. SHELLS walks out of his room and calls KATES name.

DR. SHELL

(loudly and clearly begins to talk)

Kate?

KATE then looks up with a sharp look on her face, slowly gets up out of her seat and walks in DR. SHELL’s room.

INT. DR. SHELLS ROOM. DAY

DR. SHELL

How can I be of help this morning?

KATE looks up at him sheepishly.

KATE

Well, I’ve been concerned for a while now, I feel like I’m on a constant downer.

KATE looks at the floor.

DR. SHELL

Okay, do you feel as if there’s a reason for this? Maybe triggered by something?

KATE

Since my father turned ill I’ve been finding it difficult to cope with everything, my family are struggling and I’m getting no support from anyone else.

DR. SHELL

(hesitates before speaking)

Well it sounds like you’re having a bit of a tough time, I can recommend you to a councillor so you can talk about your problems, if you feel strongly enough about how down you’re feeling, I could give you a prescription of antidepressants? It has to be taken twice a day and should leave you feeling better about things until you’ve managed to get things back on track again.

Final script for Prelim task - Blind Date

INT. MAGGIE’S BEDROOM. EVENING
MAGGIE is nervously getting ready for a blind date whilst MARGRET is explaining what her date is like as she is the one who set them up.

MAGGIE

(Trembling in her breathe)

Ergh. I can’t believe I’m so nervous.

MARGRET

(Excitedly)

Honestly, you’ll be fine.

MAGGIE

Explain to me what he’s like please.

(Persuasively)

It might calm my nerves.

MARGRET

Well he has short blonde hair, bright blue eyes. And he is into music.

(MAGGIE starts dancing round holding her dress up against her)

INT. RESTURANT. NIGHT

BOB is waiting at a table for two for his date, MAGGIE, as he is nervously tapping his foot.

MAGGIE

(Shaking in her speech)

Hi, you must be Bob?

BOB

(Jumps up out of seat and shakes MAGGIE’s hand)

Yes I am, nice to meet you Maggie.

MAGGIE

(Nervously laughs and takes her seat)

So how are you?

INT. RESTAURANT. NIGHT.

Time has passed on MAGGIE and BOBS date and it is now coming to an end.

MAGGIE

(Happy, and laughing from a previous joke)

I was so nervous about coming today, but I’m glad I’m here. It’s been a great time.

BOB

Yeah, I would love to see you again sometime.

(Nervous)

I have your number, I’ll call you?

MAGGIE

That sounds good.

EXT. ON A STREET. NIGHT

After a successful date MAGGIE and BOB walk down the street holding hands. BOB then turns a kisses her on the cheek.

As they get to the corner. MAGGIE and BOB go their separate ways.

MAGGIE

(On the phone really excited)

Hey, Margret had a really great time tonight, thank you so much for setting us up. I think I really like him.

(Hangs up and crosses the road)

(car noise and crash)

EXT. ON ANOTHER STREET. NIGHT

BOB hears the noise and turns around wondering what it was.

EXT. BACK IN THE ROAD. NIGHT

An arm is shown covered in blood which is presumably MAGGIE’S.

Final Prelim video

The Shooting

This is a Amelia, a member from my group setting up the lighting for our film noir scene.

Shot log

Editing the Prelim Video

This shows the shots being edited into the correct place in the sequence.

This shows cutting the clips to by using either the 'mark in' or 'mark out' tools.

This shows sound being added to the Prelim video.

Evaluation of Prelim task

My prelim task enabled me to learn and develop new skills when filming. This includes things such as 180 degree rule when filming, shot reverse shots and match on action sequences.
Throughout my prelim task I included many different types of shots to demonstrate what I am capable of doing when using a camera. Firstly, I have learnt how to set up a script correctly. We were given examples of properly set up scripts and learnt the basic screenplay format e.g. slug lines, actor direction, dialogue etc.
I used a new editing program when putting together my prelim task. This program was called ‘Adobe Premier’. I found it difficult to use at first but further through the editing process it was easier to understand. I could then cut my shots, put them into the correct order and add effects and sounds. Evidence of this is shown in my prelim video.
Before we were able to film we were taught how to create film noir scenes. For this I needed to learn how to use the lights in the studio. As we were being taught how to set up different types of lighting, I was also able to the names of each different type of lighting, and how to achieve them in the studio e.g. low key lighting, high key lighting.
I have gained confidence when using a camera and my skills have developed. I can adjust white balance and I’m able to control the steadiness of the camera. This can be achieved by using a tripod which I also gained knowledge in how to use and set up. In my prelim task all of my shots are still and positioned correctly.
Not a lot of feedback has been received yet about my prelim task. However, the ending is unpredictable to the audience therefore feedback has been mostly positive. The prelim task has been criticised slightly, this is because shots are not continuously flowing through the sequences, however taking this on board I can use this constructive criticism to make sure my final project of making an opening sequence to a film perfect.
Some improvements could be made for my prelim task. One improvement is getting the shots completely right without any shakiness. Also, the editing could be improved by allowing shots to flow properly throughout the video. An incontinence of this prelim task was the lack of time we had to achieve it in. We had to complete our prelim task in a few days which meant filming in whatever weather conditions. Unfortunately for my group the weather was very raining but we had to film despite that problem.
Although some improvements could be made to the task I was very pleased with the outcome as I was able to develop my filming and editing skills that I can now carry through to my final task later on in the year. Considering we were not given much time to complete the task and the weather conditions were not in our favour, I am happy with how the task completed.
