Post-Production

Colour Correction
Colour correction is adjusting the false colour and editing any problems with the colouring, for example this could be adjusting contrast or brightness.
The purpose of this task is to edit particular shots in order for them to match each other regarding the brightness and contrast, this is so the final footage looks professional. When filming we found that although we used the white balance setting on the camera, most shots still appeared to have quite a yellow tint to them. This means that we will be colour correcting most of our shots for them to look natural and to fix any falseness.

Below is a shot before correcting the colour:

This shot is quite dull and not as white as we'd have liked, although we did use the white balance function when filming.

On premiere, to fix this problem I had to add colour grading. I used the effects panel and dragged 'fast colour correcter' to my shot.

After adding the effect it brings up an effects channel. From here the input and output levels can be changed. For our shot both levels were lowered.

Below is a shot after correcting the colour:

Colour Grading
Colour grading is giving the footage a different colour depending on what feel is intended from the shots. For example giving the footage a red tint to connote heat.
The purpose of the colour grading task was to give a particular shot a certain feel in order to make the audience feel something. We changed the colour grading for the flashback sequence for the scene to look brighter and give it a white feel. This was to make the scene look like a dream.

Below is a shot of the scene before using colour grading:

 On premiere, I found the option 'fast colour corrector' which is under 'colour correlation'. I then dragged and applied it to my shot.

 After doing this it bought up this circle. I could drag my cursor around the circle in order to choose a colour. I wanted my shot to have a dream effect therefore the colour I needed was white, therefore I dragged it around to find the lightest colour.

Below is a shot of the scene after using colour grading:

29th December 2012 - Today we completed editing our news report ready to use in our next scenes for our opening sequence. For this we needed to apply the 'key' function to add a picture to our screen screen background. The photo that was used originally made by us on photo shop. As well as adding a background to the green screen, the 'Breaking News' title had to be added over the top of the footage. For this the 'key' function was also needed. Below is a screen shot of the final news report;

3rd December 2012 - In the lesson today me and Amelia finished editing our flashback sequence. For this I chose the most appropriate shots and then changed the effects on them. Firstly, we added a dip to white effect at the beginning. Me and Amelia made sure the duration of this was fast as it is supposed to be a quick memory that flashes back through Alex's head. To make the scene distinctive like a memory I brightened the shots to make a whitened affect. I then slowed down each of the individual shots and lastly we blurred each of the shots. I needed to make sure that the flashback sequence would stand out from the other standards shots. This would make it clear to our audience that the sequence is a flashback. Below is evidence of editing the dip to white effect at the beginning of the flashback.

11th December 2012 - Today's lesson clips were viewed and and began to be edited. Shots were put together in order and cut to make continuity editing. This allows the shots to flow well from one to the next looking professional. A few problems were found when editing the shots such as the lighting and colour. Because of the white balance some shots were differently coloured to other shots. We tried to correct the colour but unfortunately the colour was too different to be able to match the shots. This means that some scenes will have to be re-filmed in order for the colour to be similar in each shot. The first set of shots we were hoping to have at the beginning of our opening sequence were quite dull therefore we brightened up the shots. This is displayed below;

 After putting the sequence in order sound was introduced to our opening sequence. This involved cutting sound out of shots which were un-needed, and including the track 'Eyes' by Sam Young. We found that adding music over our sequence made the opening sequence look more professional. Final rough cut has been finished.

12th December 2012 - In today's lesson an attempt of creating an opening title sequence was done. A tutorial was watched online step by step. We wanted to create a heartbeat effect in 'Adobe After Effects'. After going through the steps at the end of the lesson the first attempt was unsuccessful as the heartbeat image did not move. Below is an example of the first attempt of a pulse metre effect;

13th December 2012 - Another attempt was made at the pulse metre, and this time is was successful. Unlike our previous attempt, we followed the tutorial exactly. We didn't put a key frame in the rotation of for the pulse metre. It now flows and the glow is correct. The next lesson we will be adding in the text ready for the opening titles to continue. An example of the finished productions are below;

Below is how we achieved this;

We had to lock the mask before we could begin any of work after putting our drawing onto the program.

This screen shot shows the effects we used to achieve the heartbeat monitor  The 'vagus' option made the line appear lighter. We also changed the 'segment length' option to 0.5. This changed the length of time the lighting was left on the screen after the heart monitor left the screen. The only thing we changed for the 'rendering' option was the colour, of which we changed to red. Lastly we gave the heartbeat monitor a 'glow effect' which made it look more professional looking.

Today we re-filmed some of our shots. They needed to be re-filmed due to lighting errors or shaky filming. The filming was successful and we took into consideration the low key lighting which is essential for filming a thriller film. This was used in the part of filming the part where Alex walks out of his house in the dark. This connotes danger.
Another part we re-filmed was the beginning part of the opening sequence where the kettle is being boiled, we made sure that there was no other sound in each of the clips except for the kettle boiling and the teaspoon against the mug. This exaggerates the sounds and creates tension to build up which also relates to the research I did before hand. The film 'Hunger' included this type of technique which I thought was really effective. This is why I am including it into my own opening sequence.

17th December 2012 - Today all of the clips that we re filmed where reviewed and a conclusion was made as to what ones are going to be in our opening sequence. This was successful and all clips were appropriate. Some colour correction will need to  made later on in our editing process, but overall the clips where what we'd hoped for.
Another part I did today was adjusting the speed of some of the clips. The speed is going to be a key part in our opening sequence. Playing around with the speeds allows the opening sequence to appear distorted, helping to portray the strangeness of the situation that our character is in. I will further change speeds of the clips as the editing is continued.
One of the problems in today's lesson was that when the clips were imported onto Premiere, the sound was not imported with the clips. This was not important with some of the clips as sound is not needed. However, some of the clips we need have to be imported another day where they will hopefully work, as sound is a crucial part for two of our clips at the beginning of the opening sequence, this is because it is a key factor with creating tension at the beginning of the opening sequence.
The titles where continued in this lesson as well. The titles still need to be improved to look more professional and fit the conventions. At the moment the font style does not fit the thriller genre therefore our research will be reviewed to make sure we choose an appropriate font style. A youtube video has been viewed when creating these titles, but the video has only been a guide, as we are hoping to achieve originality and creativity in our titles. Below is an example of how the titles look currently, where a glow has been edited in it, and an echo setting to add depth to the title. The titles will continue to be edited.

18th December 2012 - Today I researched into heart beat monitor sounds which would be appropriate to go over the opening titles 'A&E Productions'. I eventually found the right one which I will go home and download so we can import it onto the project.
Clips were also imported which we had re-filmed last Thursday. Speeds were also adjusted to add a sense of uncertainty to Alex's situation within the film.

21st December 2012 - The rough copy of mine and Amelia's opening sequence was handed in today. It was just a rough idea as to where we want some of the titles positioned and what we would ideally like our opening sequence to look like. There will be improvements made to the opening sequence such as changes in title fonts and the length of which titles are held on the screen. Audience feedback will also be gained from this rough copy, for which we can adjust our opening sequence according to suggests made.

8th January 2013 - Amelia and I received some feedback on our rough copy of our opening sequence. It was decided that the title did not fit the conventions of a thriller very will, therefore this lesson we chose different titles in order to fit the conventions better. We also edited our the titles to fade in and fade out, this means that they didn't jump in and out of the scene. The titles also look sharper and more obvious.
We have also decided that some parts will need to be re-filmed. These shots include the first kettle scene, as there are jump cuts which do not allow continuity editing. In the living room scene we can be seen in the mirror opposite when filming. We are going to take the mirror down in order to eliminate this issue when re-filming.
We are going to need to conduct a form of audience feedback for our thriller opening sequence before finishing it completely. This is so we can improve as much as we can and make sure it is something our target audience would be interested in watching. We are going to post our rough draft onto a social networking sight in order to get a response for improvements. We hope to get responses from friends and family, as well as stranger in order to get a non-bias view.
Audience feedback responses
After putting the opening sequence on two social networking sites (facebook and twitter), we gained some feedback. This meant being able to gain feedback from those who we know and strangers, this meant some of the opinions would definitely be unbiased.

After posting our video we were able to see what people liked about our opening sequence and tell us what they either did not understand or that they would change about it.

Below shows our feedback:

A  suggestion was made to make the beginning title shorter, as it continues for far too long. Another suggestion was to make the titles longer for the names of the people credited, such as the actors. This was suggested by two people which is shown above. This is because it is difficult to read some of the names fully as the names are not shown for a long enough period of time.

This comment is very positive, displaying that our opening sequence was well shot. After seeing this comment we are going to add a sound effect to the beginning titles for our production name. As our production name is 'A&E productions' and we have made our own heartbeat monitor, we are going to put a heartbeat monitor sound effect at the beginning of the opening sequence. From this comment we are also contemplating whether we are going to remove the slow motion part or try to keep it by seeing if we can make the transition any smoother by looking up different techniques of trying to achieve it.

Our first draft the lighting was not corrected properly, but since the draft was posted with this comment we have corrected all of the shots. The lighting has become dimmer, which also fits the thriller convention and suspense building.

We feel that the heartbeat titles are professional. However we are taking into consideration that sound should be added. We are going to put the heartbeat monitor sound over the titles and possibly start the music earlier in the opening sequence but on a low volume. This would be achieved by adding key frames in the sound.

Again another comment was given to us about music. We also had some difficulty with the mise en scene in the shot with the mug. This was because we filmed it with hot water instead of tea which can be obviously seen in the opening sequence. To eliminate this problem we will be re-filming.

I do not think there is much to change with this comment. Unless we changed the whole idea our storyline cannot get clearer. The only thing we are able to do is make a more distinct difference between the flashback sequence and rest of the opening sequence. This can be achieved by making the flashback sequence brighter and more 'dream' looking. We can also dim the lighting for the rest of the opening sequence.

The shot of the father is a cutaway shot and allows us to cut to the TV without it looking jumpy. However we can fix the suddenness of the shot by using transfer effects between the shot of the father and the close up of the TV.
All of the comments we gained from our audience feedback will help with the overall success of the opening sequence. We were able to get a clear idea as to what works within our opening sequence and what does not. We also now know what else can be edited to improve it as a whole.

This was the version of our opening sequence that we asked to have feedback for:

8th January 2013 - Today Amelia and I worked on our titles. We edited them as before we felt as if the titles did not fit the thriller genre very well. We found a font that we felt was more appropriate. The name of this was called 'Engrave' and it now looks more bulky and dramatic. A shadow effect was also given to the text making the text look mysterious.
As well as this, we fixed the timing of the kettle at the beginning of the opening sequence. In the first draft the kettle did not click, which did not make sense as the sound of the kettle boiling built up to nothing. Although we have edited it as much as we can now, we are going to re-film on Monday to make sure all of the mise en scene is correct and every shot looks as professional as it can be.
